When your dentist discovers a cavity, you will be informed. An appointment to correct the damage of dental decay begins with a local anesthetic to numb the nerve, tooth, and surrounding tissue. Then the decayed material will be removed usually with a dentist’s high-speed drill. Once the decayed material is removed, the filling material will be prepared based on the depth of cavity. If the cavity is deep, then a base may be used to prevent tooth reactions to hot and cold substances. Finally, the filling material is applied. The choices for filling materials are silver, resin, porcelain, or gold. A root canal may be necessary if the pulp of the tooth is infected.
